Midnight navy DK yarn: approximately 750 (850, 1,000) yd. Muted gold DK yarn: 60 yd. 4.5 mm hook, stitch markers, blunt needle, scissors and tape measure.
Gauge, sizes and fit
16 dc and 8 rows = 4 in / 10 cm after wet blocking. Make a 24-stitch by 12-row swatch. Use the same yarn and hook for the motifs; the crescent will be about 4 in along its curved outer edge.
S (M, L), for bust 32–34 (36–38, 40–42) in / 81–86 (91–97, 102–107) cm. Finished chest: 36 (40, 44) in / 91 (102, 112) cm, giving 2–4 in positive ease. This is a sleeveless pullover top, not an open-front cardigan. The lower front and back have the same width. The armhole step removes eight stitches per panel, and the 32-stitch neck opening is constant across sizes.

Complete garment instructions
1. Lower front and lower back
Make two identical lower panels. Ch 74 (82, 90). Row 1: dc in third ch from hook and across: 72 (80, 88) sts. Rows 2–28 (29, 30): ch 2, turn, dc in every st. Fasten off at the end of each lower panel.
2. Back armhole steps and upper back
With RS facing, skip first 4 sts of the final lower row and attach navy in next st. Upper Row 1: ch 2, dc in that same st and the next 63 (71, 79) sts, leaving final 4 lower stitches unworked: 64 (72, 80) sts. Upper Rows 2–16 (17, 18): ch 2, turn, dc across. The back is now 44 (46, 48) total rows high. Fasten off. Mark 16 (20, 24) shoulder stitches at each end of the top row; the center 32 stitches form the back neck.
3. Front armholes and neck opening
Start the upper front exactly like upper back Row 1: leave 4 sts at each side and work 64 (72, 80) dc. Work even through Upper Row 8 (9, 10). Fasten off. With RS facing, mark first 16 (20, 24) sts for one shoulder, next 32 sts for the neck opening, and final 16 (20, 24) sts for the other shoulder.
4. Separate front shoulders
Join navy at the outer end of the first marked shoulder. Shoulder Row 1: ch 2, dc in each of its 16 (20, 24) sts only. Rows 2–8: ch 2, turn, dc in every shoulder st. Fasten off. With RS facing, join at the inner marked stitch of the other shoulder and work toward the outer armhole edge over its 16 (20, 24) sts. Work 8 shoulder rows total, no increases or decreases. Leave the center 32 sts unworked. Both front shoulders must now reach the same total height as the back.
5. Join body and finish openings
With RS together, seam each front shoulder stitch to the matching back shoulder stitch: 16 (20, 24) pairs on each side. Leave the back's center 32 sts free. Seam each side only along the 28 (29, 30) lower-body row ends, leaving the stepped upper edges open as armholes. There are no sleeves. With RS out, sc around the neck: 32 sc across back neck, 16 sc down one 8-row front neck edge, 32 sc across front neck base, 16 sc up the other edge: 96 sc total. Place a marker at each corner; keep tension relaxed, without adding corner stitches. Join and fasten off. For each armhole work 4 sc across each of its two horizontal steps and 2 sc in each upper dc row end on front and back: 72 (76, 80) sc. Along hem work 1 sc in each foundation stitch: 144 (160, 176) sc around. Join each edging round with sl st.
6. Gold crescent
With gold ch 17. Row 1 across 16 chains, starting in second chain: sl st in next 2 ch, sc in next 2, hdc in next 2, dc in next 4, hdc in next 2, sc in next 2, sl st in final 2. This is 16 worked chains. Fasten off with a long sewing tail. Gently curve the narrow foundation edge inward to form a crescent; the varying stitch heights make its thicker middle. Tack both pointed ends and the outer curved edge onto the upper left front as worn, with the open side pointing toward the center front. Place the top point 2 in below the shoulder seam and 2 in in from the armhole; keep the applique clear of the neck.
7. Three five-point stars
For each star make a magic ring. Round 1: 10 sc into ring; close ring and join with sl st. Round 2: repeat five times: sc in next sc, ch 3, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, sc in next ring sc. Each repeat uses exactly 2 ring stitches and creates one pointed ray; five repeats use all 10 ring stitches. Join to first sc and leave a sewing tail. Make exactly three stars. Block the points gently. Sew them as a small rising diagonal group on the lower left front as worn, with star centers 3, 4.5 and 6 in above the hem and approximately 3, 4.5 and 6 in in from the left side seam. 8. Finish and wear
Secure motif points with small stitches through the navy stitch tops, not through both garment layers. Check that the side seams lie straight and the armholes remain open.
